Kirby star allies review mix11/29/2022 ![]() ![]() ![]() What could very well bug some folks it that the game is easy to a fault. King Dedede growing King Kong arms was just the beginning of the crazy stuff that happens in this game, leading to creative situations all throughout the 8-10-hour ride. ![]() I feel like this might be needed to grab the attention of those who are sick of this formula.Īll being said, Kirby Star Allies is still a lot of fun to play if you are still a fan of the formula or has never played a Kirby game in their life. The combat is a little more fleshed out and you can use allies to combine abilities, but a lot of these elements are a mixture of things seen previously in earlier entries of Kirby games, which is fine considering Nintendo loves throwing in nostalgia for their classic franchises, but there’s not something that’s completely innovative to games or Kirby games, just a collective expansion on previously explored ideas.Īt the climax, which takes a 3D Star Fox-ish boss encounter, I was thinking to myself, why hasn’t Nintendo tried a fully 3D Kirby game? It’s worked for Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokémon, Donkey Kong, even Kid Icarus came back 20 years later in his own fully-3D game and it worked out for him. You go from level to level, either eating or beating up adorable creatures, floating to different platforms and solving easy challenges, ending with either a special door or a fun boss battle. There are new powers, boss fights that take advantage of multiple party members and every level throws something completely bonkers or interesting at you, but at the end of the day, it’s still a Kirby game that plays like a Kirby game. However, if you are sick of Kirby’s same adventure-platformer formula and hope the “Star Allies” would dramatically change Kirby like with Super Mario Odyssey & Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild, you will be disappointed. Knowing that I am mostly a solo reviewer with no one locally to aid in reviews, I cannot comment on the local multiplayer, but I was pleased to know how much fun a Kirby game is, years later. My only issue with the Star Allies only comes from sometimes not following a dodge or jump as fast as you, creating moments where my buddies were taken out by not very challenging platforming obstacles. The friendly A.I. are mostly intelligent, reacting each situation with their given talents, either beating up foes or like for example, a snow or water-type buddy will immediately put out a fire that’s in the way of an alternative path. Each character has their own abilities that they’ll efficiently use when there are enemies or things to activate. Your allies can even be some of the early bosses after you defeat them. What we call “Star Allies” is basically a four-player co-op system that can either happen with local play or from just NPCs. This time though, Kirby can also toss a heart towards an enemy that possesses a specific ability, turning them into buddies. What eating things would do in a gameplay regard depends on what enemy you’ve eaten, each containing a set of attacks along with exploration challenges that require a specific power. #KIRBY STAR ALLIES REVIEW MIX SERIES#This was never a game series bent on story-telling and Star Allies is no different in that regard. Somebody wants to take over the world for some reason and thus, taking Kirby on a wild, colorful ride across a diverse set of locations. Why is he doing all this or are there consequences behind eating other critters? The simple answer is don’t ask, don’t tell. If you somehow don’t know what a Kirby game is like, picture a 2D adventure-styled platformer with a character that can devour almost any enemy, so he can use their powers. ![]() Being the successful platform that the Nintendo Switch has become, it’ll only make sense for the big N to celebrate by developing new entries to their classic library of wonderful franchises, while make new ones at the same time.Ĭan Kirby Star Allies be the next amazing Nintendo Switch Exclusive? I grew up with several classic video game characters from both Sony & Nintendo, including the adorable cannibal we come to know as Kirby. ![]()
