Printpress alamogordo11/20/2022 ![]() ![]() Finally Chang is born and is quickly indoctrinated into Mao’s communist machine as a Red Guard. Then Yu-Fang’s daughter Bao Qin and her husband experience horrendous trauma under Chairman Mao Zedong’s regime. The clear image of Yu-Fang’s (the author’s grandmother) having her feet broken repeatedly by her mother, bandaged and curled into tiny shoes is forever seared in my mind (her mother was preparing her for sale as a concubine to a high-ranking military official). I can visualize them now as if two decades hasn’t passed by since I read it. My first stand out shake-up was Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang, about the lives of three generations of Chinese women: Chang, her mother and her grandmother. High school and university is not the end! After all, education is what you make it. So I look for omitted histories and in the process I’ve created my own masterclass. When I consider the divisiveness in America today, I often think our narrow racist education has much to answer for. It’s necessary to listen to different experiences and learn from them. For this reason I’ve gravitated towards nonfiction, particularly memoirs. I don’t want to reinforce what I’ve been taught to know, I want to be challenged, shaken up. The more I read the more I seek out books that teach me something new. And some of these journeys, past and present, have been literally life changing. Since starting this blog with Lisa, I am whipping through books and traveling like never before. Wayfinding through books is an exciting way to experience the world. Eventually I end up in Russia sitting in on a conversation between Vladimir Putin and Rex Tillerson before heading off again to who knows where. A book about Appalachia may lead to reading a book about steel mills, so I pack my bags for Cleveland! I then jump a train to a West Virginian honkytonk and after a few beers somehow wind up hungover in a Texas oil field. The beauty of traveling this way is that I don’t have to. ![]() Sometimes I love a place so much I don’t want to leave. ![]() So far this year I have gone to Iran, ancient Greece, England, Russia, Italy, the Jim Crow South and Cleveland (saved the best for last).
